Peneda's Glacial Landscape - Geotour
Discover all about the glaciers that covered this mountain during the last ice-age through the many records you’ll be able to recognize in the landscape.
During this fantastic 5-hour hike come across well-preserved moraines and thick lodgement-till deposits, estimate the weight of massive erratic blocs, wander around the plateau and deduce the ancient ice-flow direction just by looking at roche-moutonnée.
If the weather is kind to us, enjoy a unique view over all the mountain ranges that constitute the Peneda-Gerês National Park.
Notice how the people occupying these tough territories used Geology to their advantage and made changes to the landscape to serve different purposes. Explore small villages settled on cirques’ slopes and stone fenced fields, dispersed over fine-graded materials on their floors.
Complete the tour visiting Our Lady of Peneda (a 18th century sanctuary built over a 13th century shrine) which will offer an incredible example of how the landscape can become part of the religious rite.
