Day Out

Cobb Valley Reservoir tour

7 hours

Cobb Reservoir is deep in Kahurangi National Park and only accessible via a narrow, winding gravel track from Golden Bay. The road into the reservoir and the area around this isolated reservoirs are of outstanding beauty and is generally accepted by naturalists as one of the most interesting places to visit. The Cobb Reservoir, six kilometres long and 819m above sea level, feeds the Cobb Power Station, and is the highest hydro storage lake in New Zealand. The 32m high earth dam was built about 1950.

The access road leads over Cobb Ridge, down to Cobb Reservoir and along the lake's shore, providing access to tramping tracks in the area surrounding the valley. The road was built in the 1940s and remains unsealed from Cobb Power Station onwards. An area of outstanding beauty, it was also once the centre of major asbestos mining operations. For this tour, we use the BMW X5 to carry up to four guests in comfort. We can provide a healthy, tasty picnic with some excellent local white wine, or bring your own packed lunch. (Picnic $20 per person). Day Out’s concession with the Department of Conservation (the National Park authority) does not allow us to conduct guided walks, though we can make recommendations and point out start points.
