Experience Authentic Isaan Cusine in Thonburi

2 hours

Muy and Sumai are siblings who host together in their large shop house studio along with their friend and neighbor Mam, an expert cook. Their studio is located near Wong wian Yai, a historic neighborhood of Bangkok near China Town and Pakklong Talaad that is famous for the largest flower market in Bangkok. Sumai teaches art and Muy owns a café in the city. Having grown up in Isaan, the northeastern part of Thailand, Muy and Sumai are passionate about sharing their Isaan cuisine and culture with guests. The region of Isaan is known for its distinctive cuisine and it holds a special place in their heart. Muy and Sumai want people to know that there is more to Thai food than pad Thai and tom kha gai and would love to share unique Isaan dishes. A meal with Muy and Sumai might include their local friends as your hosts are social people who enjoy hosting along with their friends.

A former restaurant cook, Mam and her family are from the Northeastern Isaan and Northern regions of Thailand. Mam learned to cook from her family of amazing cooks and loves to cook for guests dishes from the different regions of Thailand. She especially loves to cook pad kaphrao gai, minced chicken in holy basil, a dish that her mother taught her as a child. Join Mam at Muy and Sumai’s studio and enjoy dishes that originate from the various parts of Thailand. Please note that Mam does not speak English but Muy and Sumai will act as your translators.

What to expect:

Market Visit:

Meet your host at Wongwian Yai BTS station and together take a taxi or tuk tuk for about 15 minutes to Phrannok market. This is a big fresh, wet market where you can find various types of ingredients, including some that you might not have seen before like frogs, turtles, and eels. Experience the vibe of street vendors hawking their wares and locals shopping. After the market tour, you will take a tuk tuk back to Sumai’s kitchen to learn to cook an Isaan meal.

Cooking Experience:

Join Mam in her friend Sumai’s kitchen and and learn to cook Thai dishes from the different regions of Thailand. You will be joined by Sumai or Muy who act as translators since Mam does not speak much English. Together, your hosts will share their recipes and tips for how to make the dishes you prepare delicious! Sumai lived abroad for a long time so she can also suggest substitutes for ingredients you may not be able to find at home. You will learn to cook 1-2 dishes and your cooking class will last about an hour.

Meal:

Join your hosts Mam and Sumai (or Muy) at their dining table and enjoy dishes such as pad hoy lai, clams stir fried with chili paste and basil leaves, nam tok muu (Isaan style spicy grilled pork salad) and gaeng khiiaw waan gai, green curry with chicken. Your dishes will be accompanied by Thai rice noodle and local vegetables. Choose a starting time, either: 11:30am or 6:00pm.
