What to expect:
Cooking Experience:
Join Yukiyo in her small but efficient kitchen and learn to cook traditional Japanese tempura from scratch. Your hands-on Japanese cooking class will last about 45 minutes. You will learn how to make tempura batter and fry vegetables like maitake mushrooms, sweet potato and the delicate shiso leaf to a perfect level of crispness during your tempura cooking lesson. Yukiyo will give you an understanding of which seasonal vegetables are ideal for tempura and why. You will also help Yukiyo put together a beautiful bowl of chirashi (scattered) sushi, a quintessential homemade Japanese dish of fish, sushi rice and seasonal ingredients. Enjoy learning about the tips and techniques involved in Japanese cooking before you sit down at the table to share the meal you helped prepare with host Yukiyo.
Meal:
Meet your host Yukiyo at her modern studio apartment. You will be welcomed into her home with traditional Japanese rice crackers and Japanese tea or sake as you hear Yukiyo share stories about her life in California and Taiwan. Join Yukiyo at her dining table where you will get to see an artful table setting and dine on traditional Japanese tableware and ceramics. Enjoy an authentic, homemade Japanese meal that includes dishes such as chirashi sushi, vegetable tempura, crystal soup, squid with Japanese taro, and seasonal fruit for dessert. On occasion, you may be joined by Yukiyo's boyfriend who is a professional cook. Choose a starting time, either: 12:00pm or 6:00pm.
Note:
Please note that a glass of sake is included in the cost of the experience.
