Organic & Healthy Spanish Cuisine with Fun Locals
Carolina lives in a charming Catalan apartment conveniently located one block away from a major subway line in the trendy neighborhood of L’Eixample. She is a holistic dietician who helps people discover alternative foods that improve their health. She studied natural foods and its benefits and believes that what you eat can make a big difference in how you feel. Carolina started cooking as a young girl and now cooks almost every day for herself and her husband. One of her favorite things to do is to recreate in her kitchen interesting dishes that she tries at restaurants. She loves traveling and is keen to get to know a place through its food. Originally from Argentina, Carolina has lived in Spain for almost two decades and she and her husband Victor love to share the food and culture of their region with travelers. Carolina’s cuisine would best appeal to travelers seeking healthy alternatives and a thoughtful sourcing and preparation of local foods.
What to expect:
Market Visit: Meet your host Carolina at the entrance to the Pinxto Bar inside La Boqueria, Barcelona’s main marketplace. This is a lively, covered market that both tourists and locals frequent. Walk through the market and explore with your host local and regional produce sold by her favored vendors at the market. You will learn about regional foods and purchase a few ingredients that you will use during your cooking class after the market tour. Your market tour will last about one hour after which you will walk 15 minutes together to Carolina’s home to begin your Spanish cooking class.
Cooking Experience: Join your hosts Carolina (and Victor in the evenings) in their small kitchen and learn to cook a healthy and authentic Spanish meal. Your hands-on cooking class will last about 1.5 hours during which you will learn to make a regional appetizer, a main and a side dish from scratch. Enjoy learning about Spanish cooking from your hosts before you sit down at their table to share the meal you helped prepare together.
Meal: Meet your host Carolina and her husband Victor (if you choose an evening experience) at their typical Catalan apartment with exposed brick and beams, arched doorways that is filled with plants. They will welcome you with a drink as you sit in their living room, sharing stories about your day while listening to their favorite music. You will then join your hosts at their dining table to enjoy a healthy and authentic, organic Spanish and Catalan meal. Your meal will include an appetizer like pan con tomate with jamon Iberico, olives and goat cheese followed by a main course of seafood such as squid poached in olive oil and lemon served with asparagus and celeriac or mussels steamed with white wine and herbs served with arugula salad or steamed vegetables with garlic. Your meal will conclude with a dessert of dairy-free homemade ice-cream or mel i mato (a Catalan dessert made from mato cheese drizzled with eucalyptus honey and nuts).
Choose a starting time, either: 1:00pm or 8:00pm.
Note: If you choose evening experiences, Carolina hosts along with her husband Victor. Carolina is happy to accommodate travelers who are gluten-free or vegans so just include it in your dietary restrictions when you make your booking.
