Pearl Master Class at Elizabeth Quay
On this 60-minute master class you will become well acquainted with pearls and the pearling industry - from the days of dangerous diving to the modern techniques of cultured pearl farming and see a pearl harvested from its oyster right before your eyes. Before beginning your experience, make yourself known to one of our friendly staff who will direct you into the harvest room where you will perch up overlooking the beautiful Swan River.
Immerse yourself in the era of hard hat diving as your guide shares stories of how pearling started and the fascinating indigenous influence on the history of pearling in Broome. Discuss the dangers of pearl diving and the heavy diving suits, worn to help divers drag along the ocean floor searching for shell. You will then watch rare archival footage of a hard hat pearl diver on board a Lugger (pearling boat) during an expedition to find shell. Enjoy light refreshments and a special pearl meat taster at the midpoint of the master class. Your guide will then share some interesting information about modern pearling practices and perform a live pearl harvest right in front of you. It is fascinating seeing a beautiful pearl extracted from a not-so-beautiful oyster. A guided tour of the showroom and demonstration of the different types of pearls will cap off your harvest experience. You are welcome to ask as many questions as you’d like and leave with a whole new outlook on pearling and pearls.
