Thai-Chinese Snacks and Small Plates in Bangkok
Wariya and her aunt, Porntip, are lifelong food lovers. Educated in the United States, Wariya took advantage of the extra time left on her visa to enroll in a culinary school where she honed her talents. Now back home in Bangkok, she works in the family seafood business and cooks in her spare time. Wariya and Porntip, both warm and welcoming hosts, love to introduce guests to traditional Thai recipes and share their deep culinary knowledge. After just a few hours together you’ll feel like part of the family.
What to expect:
Market Visit:
Visit the local market to learn about Thai produce. Your host will help you discover local Thai fruits and vegetables you may not have seen before. You might pick up a few items for your meal before returning home to start cooking.
Cooking Experience:
Together in the kitchen you’ll learn to make a 2-3 of dishes, which range from Thai-Chinese dishes to hard-to-find traditional royal recipes. You can expect the cooking experience to last 1-2 hours. Then join Wariya and Porntip at the table to enjoy the meal, which also includes dishes they have prepared in advance.
Meal:
Leave the hustle and bustle of central Bangkok and arrive at Wariya’s home in a quiet, gated residential neighborhood. Her house is located next to a peaceful canal and is surrounded by a large garden where she grows a variety of vegetables and herbs, some of which you may use in your meal.
Thai people love to snack, and Wariya and Porntip are especially skilled at cooking these kinds of “small plates” style dishes, which are typically eaten in between meals. Choose a starting time, either: 11:00am or 5:00pm.
