Traditional French Home Cooking and Local Market Tour
Stephanie is a native from Paris who spent years with her family in Normandy while her children were growing up. The daughter of parents who were very much committed to Parisian business life, Stephanie was fond of watching and helping her parents (and then later her husband) as they frequently hosted friends and business relations. She described herself as a child as the “petit souris” (little mouse) who was sneaking in to the kitchen to watch her mom cook. She went on to improve her cooking skills, graduating from one of the top hospitality schools in Lausanne, Switzerland. Now she lives in Paris in a lovely apartment in the Batignolles neighborhood. She is passionate about the marvels of her local market, just across the street. She has both knowledge of the various local ingredients and of teaching how to cook traditional and typical homestyle French dishes. When she is not in the kitchen, Stephanie loves working with her hands, whether it is gardening, needlepoint, or quilting.
What to expect:
Market Visit: Meet at Stephanie's home and walk together just across the street to her local covered market to meet some of Stephanie's local producers (all of whom know Stephanie well from her frequent visits!). You might stop at the local fishmonger, the fromagerie, and stop at the wine store on your way home, and on your way pick up a selection of cheeses and a few ingredients for your meal. Walk the short way (less than five minutes) back to Stephanie's apartment where you will prepare your four-course meal together and enjoy it in Stephanie's separate dining room. Please note that market tours are not available on Mondays since the markets are closed then.
Cooking Experience: Learn to make two dishes with Stephanie in her galley kitchen in her lovely Paris home. You might learn an appetizer such as salmon tartare or potage, a creamy vegetable soup, in addition to a classic main such as boeuf bourguignon, all with ingredients picked up from the local market just across the street. Finish preparing your meal and then sit down together in Stephanie's separate dining room to enjoy your meal. In addition to the dishes you prepare you will also enjoy a cheese course and dessert, if not made together.
Meal: Come visit Stephanie's lovely home in the Batignolles neighborhood in the northwest of Paris. Stephanie will introduce you to French home cooking over an elegantly presented four-course meal. Enjoy a seasonal first course that might include a salmon tartare or seasonal vegetable soup, followed by a traditional entrée such as boeuf bourguignon or blanquette de veau (French veal ragout). You will then be served a cheese course followed by a dessert such as a seasonal fruit tarte or "charlotte aux fruits", a cake of meringue topped with fresh fruit and surrounded by biscuits.
Choose a starting time, either: 12:30pm or Not offered.
Note: Please note, as with most Paris homes there is no air conditioning in Stephanie's apartment.
