A Taste of Martinborough: Foodie Delights Tour
After picking you up from Wellington, we work our way up the Hutt Valley to our first stop at the Remutaka mountain range summit, 555 metres above sea level where we view the Remutaka Crossing monument commemorating 60,000 New Zealand troops who made the crossing from the military camp in Featherston to the Port of Wellington between 1915 and 1918.
From the summit it’s about a 20 minute drive down to the quaint South Wairarapa town of Greytown where we visit Schoc Chocolates for a tasting of a wide array of artisan chocolates and of course purchase if you are tempted!
It’s now time to taste our first wine of the day in the Gladstone area. We will visit either Johner Estate Winery, Gladstone Vineyard or Cottier Estate for our first tastings of the day.
After sampling our first wines it’s just a short drive south east to the Pinot Noir Capital of the North Island – Martinborough where we will have tastings and lunch at a winery followed by tastings at 1 further winery. My selected wineries are a choice of Tiwaiwaka Wines, Grava, Alexander Vineyard, Haythornthwaite Winery, Poppies Martinborough, Palliser Estate, Moy Hall, Coney Wines and Tirohana Estate.
At one of the wineries we also get an opportunity to have an in depth chat with the wine maker/owner.
Once our palate needs a change we head off to Olivo for Extra Virgin Olive Oil tastings where we get to sample a wide range of fabulous oils, many infused with a wide array of flavours. We also have a wander through the olive grove with the Olive Oil maker and gain an in-depth understanding of what it takes to grow Olives and produce outstanding Olive Oil.
Upon completing the Olive Oil tastings we head back into Martinborough to visit the only Craft Brewery in the township for a drink of your choice. If Craft Beer is not your thing you can have a wander around this lovely village which has a variety of boutique gifts and clothing shops.
We finish our day with a visit to C'Est Cheese in Featherston for a platter of magnificent local cheeses (Remutaka Pass cheeses are made on site) from Owner/Cheese Maker Paul Broughton.
We depart for Wellington around 3pm getting back to your selected drop off location around 4:30pm.
Inclusions:
Bottled New Zealand spring water, lunch, tastings and entry fees.
