Communist Bike Tour of Nowa Huta
After greeting your guide and small group at a bicycle shop in Krakow, start pedalling toward the former socialist suburb of Now Huta. During the ride, you’ll see a former air base transformed into an aviation museum. On arrival in Nowa Huta, you’ll stop first at the Church of Our Lady — famed for its ship-like shape. Hear of how the church was a symbol of religious conflict during communist regimes and admire its modern interior before continuing to Nowa Huta’s cultural heart. The distinctly socialist architecture and abandoned army tanks make for an interesting ride: cycle through stolid residential areas and pass cinemas and theatres that provided the only form of entertainment during the communist age. Next, pedal through Nowa Huta’s green lung to the Vladimir Lenin Steelworks — a perfectly preserved paradigm of communist architecture. Here of how the steel mill accelerated Nowa Huta’s communist regime. In a communist-style milk bar, break for a fulfilling lunch and allow your guide to elaborate on Nowa Huta’s interesting history. Conclude your tour with a picturesque ride beside the banks of the Vitrula River before returning to the bike shop in Krakow and bidding your guide farewell.
