Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Sigiriya Rock Fortress is an ancient rock fortress located in Matale District near Dambulla. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa, this site was selected by King Kashyapa (477 – 495 CE) for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure, the Lion Rock. Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site.

Day 02

Breakfast at the hotel. Thereafter proceed on a trekking expedition to Hiriwadunna village which ends with a Sri Lankan lunch prepared in a farmer’s house. In the evening, climb Pidurangala which is a towering rock near Sigiriya which is home to an ancient cave temple. It is a challenging climb but the view from the top is incredible.

Hiriwadunna Village Tour

The Hiriwadunna Village trek begins with an awesome walk along a bund of a “Wewa” or manmade reservoir. The reservoir itself, the surrounding scrub jungle, marshland and village are a hive of early morning and evening activity. The amazing birdlife, butterflies and possible sightings of crocodile only add to the charm of seeing the villagers as they go about their early morning tasks of fishing, or washing clothes at the periphery of the lake. Thereafter you will enjoy a Bullock Cart Ride while enjoying sightseeing of the rural village life. Your next phase of adventure will be a “Catamaran Safari”on the lake. Chance of experiencing bird watching while on the Catamaranlike peacocks, green pigeons, cormorants, green bittens, variety of king fishers, eagles and many more birds, land monitors andwater monitors as well. Finally end off with a traditional lunch at a local house prepared by the village women with a cookery class. After lunch, a relaxed walk back to the main road by the lake bund.

Pidurangala Rock

Pidurangala is an enormous rock located a few kilometres north of Sigiriya. The two rocks have an interlinked history: whilst King Kashyapa was building Sigiriya Rock Fortress in the 5th century, he moved monks living around Sigiriya to a new monastery on Pidurangala Rock. Pidurangala is a more challenging climb than Sigiriya, so should not be attempted only by the most agile trekkers. There is no clear path to the top: steep, uneven steps give way to an expanse of boulders and crevices that climbers must navigate in order to reach the summit. From the top, there are glorious vistas of the surrounding landscape and an incredible view of the majestic Sigiriya Rock.
