Day Out
Kahurangi National Park Wangapeka Discovery tour & Picnic
All-day tour deep into the Kahurangi National Park to the site of the old silver mining township of Gladstone. This point not only marks the start of the popular Wangapeka trail to the West Coast, but is also an area full of historical interest. In the late 19th century some major gold-seeking was done in this area until it was found to be uneconomic, leaving all the old workings and much of the machinery in place. Now a peaceful, forested area with a choice of easy walks along well-maintained trails where birdsong and the scent of the honeydew grub fill the air. A recommended walk here is to the Blue Creek resurgence where the river gushes from limestone hillside.
For this tour, we use the BMW X5 to carry up to four guests in comfort. We can provide a healthy, tasty picnic with some excellent local white wine, or bring your own packed lunch. (Picnic $20 per person). Day Out’s concession with the Department of Conservation (the National Park authority) does not allow us to conduct guided walks, though we can make recommendations and point out start points.
