El Pedral Penguins Colony, Puerto Madryn Patagonian Ranch Tour
Make your way to the meeting point in downtown Puerto Madryn, the Mujer Galesa monument, located at Av. Julio Argentino Roca 300. Board the bus and travel about 47 miles (75km) through the Patagonian plains to the south end of the Gulf Nuevo, capped off by the Punta Ninfas lighthouse. The beach there is a resting place for elephant seals and a breeding rookery for sea lions. Move on to El Pedral, an historic Patagonian ranch that is now a museum. Take a guided tour of the estancia and learn about its history; built in the early 20th century, all materials were shipped over from Europe. Your tour guide will detail the entrepreneurial atmosphere of those early days on the Valdes Peninsula. Next, take a guided tour of the nesting ground of the Magellanic penguins. A protected Ecological Reserve, the beach at El Pedral hosts some 5,000 individuals. Take a break for lunch of barbecue, lamb, empanadas, salads, and red wine. Following lunch, spend free time exploring the grounds, using the pool or visiting the farm. Wind up with a tea or coffee and a traditional Welsh cake before returning to Puerto Madryn for drop-off.
