Dunedin Peninsula Tour

Dunedin 1 day

Join us to discover some of the iconic Otago Peninsula's wildlife residents, albatross, penguins, seals and sea lions, all call this place home. These creatures are very familiar to your guide Lyndon, who's vast ecological knowledge comes from 30 years of hands-on species management in his previous role as a conservation ranger. Likewise, James has a passion for sharing in-depth knowledge, particularly in regard to his Maori heritage, a fascinating culture that is often overshadowed by Dunedin's more recent European history. Tour highlights include a boat cruise around Pukekura or Taiaroa Head and other wildlife viewing sites. We also visit areas of geological and botanical interest. During our trip, we learn more about the people of this place, both Maori and European. There is no better introduction to this Southern City than a tour with Horizon Tours.

Itinerary

We start by introducing you to this Southern city by taking a quick look at some of the finer historic buildings in Dunedin before we make our way out to the Peninsula. Then onwards to the scenic Otago Peninsula where we check out some highly productive ecosystems in our search for wildlife. Stop for lunch within a lush slice of natural forest and listen for the sounds of the birds. We’ll take a boat cruise around Pukekura or Taiaroa Head, a nature reserve famous for its northern royal albatross, but less well known for hundreds of other seabirds, including other albatross species that frequent the area and are best viewed from the sea. On the cruise, we see a breeding rookery of fur seals. Sightings of sea lions are becoming more frequent and if we are lucky we may see a little penguin foraging at sea. We stop at sites rich in geological and botanical interest. We visit cliffs near Pukekura or Taiaroa Head for a chance at being able to see Albatross in flight and discuss the history of the area. Stroll along a sandy beach where NZ fur seals or sea lions rest. Tour sites of significance to Maori and learn about the people who lived in the area, centuries before European's arrived.
