Can you remember the last time you went kayaking? Or perhaps it's something you've always wanted to do but never got the opportunity?
It wasn’t until I hired a kayak from Riverlife Adventure Centre in Brisbane, my healthy relationship with kayaking was brought back to life.
Riverlife Adventure Centre is below Kangaroo Points and is conveniently positioned on the edge of the Brisbane river, a flexible 20 minute walk from Southbank. It was immediately apparent a leisurely kayaking experience could turn into a full day of activities, with people rock climbing, abseiling, and riding the innovative URB-Es along the riverfront - just a few of the adventures offered by Riverlife.
Even though I hadn't made a booking in advance, there were enough kayaks available for me to go out on the river independently. There are kayaking lessons and guided trips offered at the centre, but on this sunny afternoon I felt in the mood for a gentle paddle at my own pace, so I went for the hire option instead. An instructor explained how to get in and out of a kayak, techniques for paddling, and safety instructions (mainly, avoid the boats!).
With the help of Riverlife’s staff, I was quickly settled and adjusted in my kayak to make my journey towards South Bank. The peaceful paddle was beautiful on the water, and undeniably a great outdoor activity. Taking advantage of the full 1.5 hr hire, I kayaked past The Goodwill Bridge and towards the Wheel of Brisbane.
On the way back to Riverlife, my vigorous paddling took a startling toll on my core and arm muscles! My imagined lazy hour of kayaking had taken a different path. While enjoying the scenery I was getting a sneaky workout without really noticing, a brilliant bonus to my day in the sun! Kayaking along the river reminded me, kayaking doesn't have to be adrenaline-filled, but can be a leisurely activity for anyone to enjoy. I can officially say I’m on that kayaking kick and will have to bring a couple of friends down with me to Riverlife to experience how enjoyable a paddle down the Brisbane river can be. It's also top of my list for Brisbane gift ideas, spreading the kayak joy to all my loved ones!
